Now that at least the World Cup provisional rosters are set, it’s time to move on towards June 11.  For the U.S., Charlie Davis is behind us for the time being, but not forgotten.  Now the story starts to focus on what’s left in our attacking arsenal.  While the focus has largely been on the tail end of our attacking options, the reality is that the third and fourth (more…)

An Age Better Forgotten: World Cup Commercials From the Golden Era – 1990

by Clive Longbottom-Fellow, Esq.

Sometimes it’s just worth it to take a look back to see how far we’ve come.  In 1990, we of course know that the World Cup was in Italy.  The U.S. team qualified for the World Cup that year for the first time since 1950.  It was an exciting time, but unfortunately the experience for the U.S. only lasted three matches. Fortunately, there was some excellence left behind for us in the form of cutting edge World Cup commercials.  (more…)

Roster overload!  Maradona’s selections?  Not surprising, it’s Maradona.  Sanity and conformity were never his things.  Raymond Domenech?  Also from the Maradona school of crazy, selecting seven midfielders and nine forwards. Like it or not, these characters will make June exciting.  Just take a deep breath, accept, and lets move on.

We’ve got some provisional World Cup rosters coming out today!  We already know fringe players like Cesc Fabregas and Fernando Torres made the cut.  Yes, that’s sarcasm.  But today we’ll see whether Bobby Zamora gets into the provisional England side, and if Herculez Gomez has done enough to be included in Bob Bradley’s plans.  Exciting times, friends.

Supporting Football Mercenaries: Playing for the Badge Is Overrated

Badge Kissing

Rolf Farquar has been a top player for Dive FC for the last two years, leading the club to its first Champions League place in Dive’s history.  Two years ago when Dive qualified for Europe, there was a sharp increase in the number of both boys and girls named Rolf in the dry but well manicured hills surrounding the club.  In twenty years, your son might come home to introduce you to his new fiancée, Rolf. You’ll probably have Rolf Farquar to thank for that. (more…)

Dear Bill Maher, If Sarah Palin Is Influential, So Is Didier Drogba

by Clive Longbottom-Fellow, Esq.

Time 100

This past Friday on Real Time with Bill Maher, Maher had on Alan Brinkley, author of The Publisher, a book chronicling the life of Time Inc.’s founder, Henry Luce.  Part of Maher’s conversation with Brinkley focused on how the current issue of Time’s 100 Most Influential People is a testament to the decaying state of the magazine business. Jose Mourinho on replacing Claudio Ranieri as Chelsea manager:  “I’ve never said that I’m a phenomenon but it’s certainly not my fault if in 2004, after arriving at Chelsea and having asked why they had got rid of Ranieri, they told me that they wanted to win and that would never have happened with him.”  That’s why he’s so special.

If it was the last day of my season, I’d probably select Issac Hayes’ theme song from Shaft to start my day.  Although I must admit, I probably would steer clear from wearing the chain mail dress thingy in the video below because that’s not really my style.  But obviously, I would replace Shaft with my name.  Frank Lampard could do the same thing tomorrow.  Some things just work. Barcelona vs. Sevilla is my game of choice for the weekend.  The match should combine well with some flank steaks, a simple mixed salad and a bottle  (or three) of Malbec.  A more complex meal will cloud the sophistication on the pitch.  The match has had a full season to properly age, and this weekend should be the right time to open.  Expect a delightful finish since it comes from the right pedigree.
