Rewarding Dedication With A World Cup: Randomness, Awesomeness and Identity In Africa

by Miriti Murungi

IMG_8440

Rewarding love is a worthwhile endeavor.  A reward signifies acknowledgment that the recipient is seen and appreciated.  The South African World Cup is an exciting time for South Africans who have been loving soccer for decades.  But if you look closely at how Africa has reacted since 2004 when South Africa was awarded the World Cup, you will notice that much of Africa has been acting as if they are co-hosts, as if this is the first communally-hosted World Cup.  If this concept is difficult to grasp, just think of how excited Canadians would be if Mexico won the right to host the World Cup, or how excited the French would be at the prospect of an Italian World Cup, (more…)

Charlie Davies’ Omission: The Good News For U.S. Soccer

by Miriti Murungi

Charlie Davies

One thing everyone adores is great comebacks. Rooting for people or teams to rise up in the face of adversity and conquer persistent foes, whether those foes are injuries or opposing teams, must be a common genetic trait bridging geography and culture. But often our hope for the comeback falls short in the face of reality.  Sometimes reality tells us that our teams are just not good enough to persevere on a given day, or in the case of Charlie Davies, that our miraculous recoveries may just need a little more time to reach the triumphant end we all hoped for. Compton United’s Field of Dreams, Or Lack Thereof

by Miriti Murungi

Compton United

NWA, I’m shaking my fist at you. You put Compton on the map.  Well played for that, I think.  But years have passed, and your mark on the map is now overshadowing other marks.  What was once the public face of Compton to the masses, or at least the first name yelled in free association, should no longer be.  This isn’t an indictment of what’s in your iPod (or mine), but rather a short plea to allow yourself, ye olde consumers of culture, to be reprogrammed to make room for the new faces of Compton. Looking Beyond Seats On A U.S. Soccer Plane – Part II

by Miriti Murungi

USA Shirt

In Part I, I discussed how our collective focus on breaking news, scores and game analysis relegates important issues to the sidelines, thereby impacting our U.S. player pool.  In Part II, I turn to a reason why we may behave the way we do.  It’s the politics; the one area major online sports outlets treat like kryptonite.

Looking Beyond Seats On A U.S. Soccer Plane – Part I

by Miriti Murungi

USA Shirt

Every four years when the World Cup rolls around, you’re guaranteed to come across countless versions of the “who gets a seat on the plane/bus/boat to [insert World Cup host country]” game. In the United States, the game typically involves an analysis of players who are yet to secure a ticket on the relevant mode of transportation, and often an analysis of where the U.S. team lacks depth.  Now trust me, I love Seats on a Plane as much as the next man, but surely there must be more if the goal is to critically assess our talent.

All of these Seats on a Plane discussions have led me to a deeper truth. We love pointing out weaknesses, but rarely do we pay much attention to how to fix these weaknesses. (more…)

Ghanaian Club Keta Sandlanders Showing How Football And Responsibility Can Co-Exist in Africa

by Miriti Murungi

Sandlanders Team

Division 2 Ghanaian club Keta Sandlanders, based on the coast of Ghana’s Volta Region, is one of the more interesting clubs around, not necessarily because it has trophies busting through the clasp of some varnished trophy cabinet, or because the Sandlanders have produced Ghanaian talents that are now household names, but because of the club’s vision of what the Sandlanders could be. by Miriti Murungi

Obama Soccer Logo

Millions around the world are counting down to June 11, 2010.  That’s the date the first soccer World Cup ever to be played in Africa will kick off in Johannesburg, South Africa.  If you haven’t taken notice beyond Charlize Theron’s antics at the drawing or just don’t care, it’s time to become a fan or at least pay attention.  Pay attention because South Africa hosting the World Cup will be a historic moment of first black president proportions.

The South African story is a powerful, historical narrative.  It’s filled with oppression, struggle, and overcoming adversity.  This moment is about much more than soccer. (more…)

Rubbing Franklins On It Won’t Solve the Lack of Imagination Problem

U.S. Youth Soccer Money

Something wrong?  No worries.  Just rub some money on it.

In the United States, conventional thinking suggests that investing in an assortment of bells and whistles is necessary to create top professional players.  Well, maybe we’re over-complicating things.

Here is a list of just a few items on the laundry list that U.S. soccer culture implies are required to develop a top level professional player:  (more…)

The Underbelly of U.S. Youth Soccer: Falling Through the Cracks

by Miriti Murungi

U.S. Youth Soccer

Followers of U.S. soccer are used to stories of talented youth players failing to make the grade at the professional level. But we rarely ever hear about players who never scratched the surface of their potential because they were never given the opportunity to get out of the starting blocks. Why would we, right? Well, the key to building a more dynamic U.S. player pool may lie in exploring the underbelly of youth soccer.  Here’s my take on a piece of U.S. youth soccer based on my experiences.

I grew up in Baltimore City in a neighborhood that was about 95% African-American. No, it wasn’t The Wire, but it wasn’t suburbia either.

Although my neighborhood was always relatively tranquil, the nearby high school that I would have attended was not. The graduation rate was dismal and the school had its share of problems, once suspending 1,200 students in one day. So my parents sacrificed their paychecks and broke out the credit cards. (more…)
