Dancing With Real Madrid feat. Sergio Ramos, Pepe & Adebayor

by Clive Longbottom-Fellow, Esq.

You know we love the dancing. Sometimes it’s beautiful, other times it’s fantastically awkward, which frankly often holds its own special kind of beauty. Take a look. You be the judge. I promise it doesn’t end with Adebayor having to apologize for something. Or does it … (more…)

Dancing with U.S. Soccer: A Gentleman’s History of Bogling and Boon-Boo-Ree featuring Juan Agudelo, Teal Bunbury & Pablo Ramirez

by Miriti Murungi

NR Boombox

And so it began with A Gentleman’s History of the Stanky Legg.

An opportunity to use goal celebration dances to learn about ourselves and share some of what we are with our friends around the world. I know, it’s just a game, right? Well, it doesn’t have to be just a game.

Jozy Altidore and Charlie Davies kicked off the era of celebratory dancing in U.S. soccer in 2009. But a new era might be upon us thanks to New York Red Bulls’ Juan Agudelo and Sporting KC’s Teal Bunbury, two newly minted senior national team players. (more…)

U.S. Soccer Goal Celebration Inspiration: Hammer Dance

by Clive Longbottom-Fellow, Esq.

MC Hammer

Building off of our last post on next steps for U.S. soccer goal celebration dances, there’s probably no better place to start than with Stanley Burrell, a man better known to the world as MC Hammer.

To be honest, I wouldn’t mind seeing Clint Dempsey break out in a Hammer shuffle next time he scores in international play. Hammer might not have the standing he used to have, but it certainly would be hilarious. If these folks can do it, I see no reason why Deuce can’t hurt ‘em. (more…)

Dancing with U.S. Soccer: A Gentleman’s History of the Stanky Legg and a Look to the Future

by Miriti Murungi

Stanky Legg

Back when I played and regularly practiced, several of my coaches emphasized celebrating. Years of sliding on unforgiving fields, pretending to shine cleats, and awkward dancing indoctrinated a group of us into the school of proper soccer, hammering into us the concept that celebration was as much a part of soccer as goal scoring and Germans. Favorite 2010 MLS Playoff Moment: Omar Gonzalez Does the John Wall

by Clive Longbottom-Fellow, Esq.

After a brief internal survey, we have concluded that the Omar Gonzalez goal celebration against the Seattle Sounders was the most entertaining moment during the 2010 MLS playoffs, which admittedly has already had a number of inspiring moments. John Wall, a former University of Kentucky basketball player, now crushing things in the nation’s capital with the Washington Wizards, unintentionally started this “dance” craze.  The video above will give you some “John Wall dance” background if you are among the uninitiated. I assume that Gonzalez is a Wall fan from his dancing ability, but even if he’s just a student of dance crazes, he deserves (more…)

The Archbishop Dances, Portrays Joy

by Clive Longbottom-Fellow, Esq.

SA World Cup

In case you missed the FIFA World Cup Kickoff Concert in Soweto, I wanted to share a magical moment that stood out for me, perhaps because it depicts South Africa’s joy better than any other moment.  Don Juan Archbishop Desmond Tutu, decked out in Bafana Bafana gear, stepped out on stage in a clearly giddy mood, sharing his joy not just in words, but in a strange, yet natural-looking interpretive dance. This, my friends, is what joy looks like. (more…)

World Cup Commercial From Coca Cola Inspires Alternative Uses For Coke

Roger Milla

Cameroonian legend Roger Milla’s goal celebrations were some of the most memorable moments of the 1990 World Cup in Italy.  The video below from Coca Cola celebrates the art of celebration.  There isn’t much that beats a proper celebration, especially if it’s your team celebrating, and especially if that celebrating is taking place at a World Cup. Check out the video complete with a Roger Milla cameo  … (more…)
