3NIL Makes a Mean Zizou Tee

You can think what you will about his person, but as a player, if you didn’t love Zinedine Zidane, you don’t love soccer. Period.

Today is Zizou’s birthday, and this is 3NIL’s rather dope Zizou tee, featuring, of course, the Frenchman’s iconic cranium. Although there have been valiant attempts to make him look as cool on cloth as he looked on grass, this Zidane t-shirt is by far the best we’ve seen. Ireland. They’ve given us many fantastic things. Add this t-shirt to the list.

There really isn’t much to explain. paddidas is a play on adid … whatever, you get it.

Plays on the adidas brand are pretty common, but every now and then a piece comes along that just makes sense. This is one of them.

Sure, if you get one of these, people will probably walk up to you in bars and say things like, “Oh my, that’s so clever!” And you will nod, because that’s how these shirt games work. But you know that, don’t you.

The Portland Timbers had a contest. No, it wasn’t a contest to see which eight year old can score from outside the stadium on the Timbers’ rugged mascot, the chainsaw-wielding Timber Joey. Nor was it a contest to see which fan could answer some archaic, lumber-related trivia question from the 1640s. It was a contest for the new millennium; a tattoo contest, ladies and gentlemen.

Only a decade ago, imagining overly child-friendly MLS teams sanctioning such a competition would be unimaginable. Back then, “cutting-edge” and “MLS marketing” weren’t exactly terms to be used in the same sentence. And it wasn’t just MLS. It’s hard imagining teams from any of the other major, American sports leagues sanctioning an ink competition a decade ago. But times sure have changed, at least in MLS.

This Hummel Sierra Leone jersey is … well, self-explanatory. Actually, it reminds me of a story a friend told me when he recently returned from Spain.

During my friend’s visit to the home of the world champions, he accompanied his girlfriend to visit her uncle and aunt who live just outside of Barcelona. My friend’s Spanish is virtually non-existent and the uncle and aunt barely speak English. It was one of those situations.  (more…)
