UEFA’s Vuvuzela Ban: Why Legislating Custom and Tradition is Problematic

UEFA has banned vuvuzelas from matches at all UEFA competitions. That includes the European Championships, the Europa League, and the UEFA Champions League.

My first instinct was: That’s rather ignorant and authoritarian. But then I realized that I had a bigger gripe. UEFA’s decision to ban vuvuzelas in European competition sets a very strange precedent. (more…)

World Cup Host Needs To Live up To Its Promise Of Better Housing For The Poor

Since the fall of apartheid, the South African government has initiated a massive effort to improve the housing situation of millions of its marginalized citizens.  South Africa’s commitment to housing was presumably such a priority that the Bill of Rights in the South African Constitution (1996) embodies this commitment:

1.    Everyone has the right to have access to adequate housing.

2.   The state must take reasonable legislative and other measures, within its available resources, to achieve the progressive realization of this right.

3.   No one may be evicted from their home, or have their home demolished, without an order of court made after considering all the relevant circumstances. No legislation may permit arbitrary evictions. (more…)

Surely the Confederation of African Football Can’t be Serious?

So let me get this straight.  Citing Article 78 of the African Cup of Nations 2010 tournament rules, the Confederation of African Football Executive Committee has decided to fine the Togo National Team $50,000 and suspend them from participating in the next two editions of the African Cup of Nations (ACN) because they withdrew from the 2010 ACN after enduring a terrorist attack that killed three people (an assistant coach, a spokesperson and a bus driver).
