MLS All-Stars vs. Manchester United: An Exercise in Comparison

by Miriti Murungi

Apples to Oranges

People have their opinions on MLS. The level of play, the format, the league’s handling of investment, and referees, among other things, are regular topics of debate. Sounds like a regular league, right? But that’s not enough to stop the comparisons.

Making comparisons is part of our DNA. And I’m not talking about soccer fans; I’m talking about humans. We compare what exists to what we are familiar with. We compare our romantic relationships to our parents’ relationships and the contrived relations we see on TV and in movies. We judge the state of our economies, not by what is, but by comparing what is to what was. Our relationship with soccer is no different. (more…)

You May Take Our Freedom But You’ll Never Take Our Football

by Mustafa Redonkulous

Today Brazil v. Chechnya. Tomorrow Argentina v. Myanmar. Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov along with Terek Grozny, Lothar Matthaeus and Oliver Kahn will take on Brazil’s 2002 World Cup winning team in Grozny later tonight.

You might remember Kadyrov from previous episodes such as being a militia leader and leading the slaughter of numerous innocents during his rise to power. He declared himself to be in excellent health and ready to lead Terek Grozny as captain.

“Ramzan Kadyrov himself will be the team’s captain,” Khaidar Alkhanov, the republic’s sport minister, said this week. “This will be a powerful stimulus for [the] players and a huge present for Chechen supporters.”

Dunga, Roberto Carlos and Romario will line up for Brazil. Bebeto, Cafu, Denilson and others from the World Cup winning team are expected to play as well.

Arsenal vs. Barcelona: Nostalgia Distorting Reality

by Clive Longbottom-Fellow, Esq.

There’s a real competition going on to decide whether Wayne Rooney or Lionel Messi is the best player in the world.  That’s because both Rooney and Messi are consistently producing at a level considerably higher than their peers, especially when it matters.  However, at the club level, the argument over who plays the best football still inevitably ends up involving Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal and Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona.  But if consistent production when it matters is a prerequisite for being considered the best footballing side in the world, it’s odd that these two sides so frequently reside in the same sentence. Balls on the field.  We knew that one was coming. Poor Pepe.

And we’ve kicked off. United moving right to left, which obviously leaves Liverpool moving in the other direction.

3 min -  Rooney scores.  But the flag is up.
