To Interpret or Refrain: An Interview With Mario Balotelli

by Miriti Murungi

On its face, smiling tells a story. But the story told by the reflex, or I suppose decision, to flash the pearly whites can be complex and originate from a wide range of what might seem like incompatible feelings. We smile for a variety of reasons. We smile when we are happy, when we are uncomfortable, to placate, and sometimes when we are simply unsure of what else to say. A smile could just as easily manifest itself as a shrug, a hug, laughter, silence, or even, in the most extreme cases, a roundhouse kick to the side of a disheveled head. (more…)

Maybe We Should Just Give David Beckham Everything

by Miriti Murungi

David Beckham

This David Beckham character has the world in his palm.

After successful stints at Manchester United and Real Madrid, Beckham decided to pursue a new challenge in America (the North one). As part of Beckham’s unique deal with MLS, he was given the option to purchase an MLS club if he stays with the LA Galaxy for the remainder of his contract. That’s a good deal for Team Beckham. And now, long-time Daily Mail football writer Martin Samuel wants to give Beckham English football.

I think we may be approaching the “David, I want you to have my wife” territory, which is fine, as long as everyone knows that that’s where we’re heading. (more…)

Samir Nasri youth

This is cute.

Recently on BBC’s Football Focus, Arsenal’s Samir Nasri sat down for an interview with his girlfriend, former professional tennis player Tatiana Golovin. The Conductor

by Miriti Murungi

Jose Torres

Every good orchestra needs a conductor to ensure that its woodwinds, percussion, brass and strings play in unison.  Soccer is no different.  To make the disjointed jointed is an art.  At times, individual performances can stand out; at times, they can even transcend the collective.  But the art of joinder can make the unexceptional exceptional, which is why a gifted conductor creating a masterpiece with seemingly simplistic movements can be so mesmerizing. Free Giuseppe Rossi: Support For An Italian International As American As Pizza

by Miriti Murungi

Giuseppe Rossi

Leave Giuseppe Rossi alone.

Holding an American passport doesn’t mean you can’t call your best friend in Sao Paulo anymore, nor does it come with a requirement to cut your ancestral ties.  As Americans, especially in today’s political environment, there’s a premium on loving America, even though no one ever really explains what that means or how to properly love the homeland.  From what I can gather, there’s a camp that emphasizes love and respect for the tangential, focusing on flags, moments of silence, pins, abstract freedom, guns and random citizens who take it upon themselves to protect our borders.  This strain of political thought often elevates love of objects over ideas, such as loving the physical flag rather than the freedoms that the flag is supposed to represent. Charlie Davies’ Omission: The Good News For U.S. Soccer

by Miriti Murungi

Charlie Davies

One thing everyone adores is great comebacks. Rooting for people or teams to rise up in the face of adversity and conquer persistent foes, whether those foes are injuries or opposing teams, must be a common genetic trait bridging geography and culture. But often our hope for the comeback falls short in the face of reality.  Sometimes reality tells us that our teams are just not good enough to persevere on a given day, or in the case of Charlie Davies, that our miraculous recoveries may just need a little more time to reach the triumphant end we all hoped for. Totti vs. Balotelli: Italy’s Double Standard

by The Chairman

Italian Flag

We’ve written a bit about the issues facing Mario Balotelli in Italy.  While many have been quick to direct blame squarely on the youngster, Francesco Totti’s actions yesterday went a long way towards showing the double standard that exists in Italian football when it comes to the treatment of its petulant football stars.  For those who didn’t see the horrific incident near the end of the Copa Italia final, below is a clip of Totti’s attack on Balotelli. Fog On The Tyne: The Paul Gascoigne Story

by RMP

Paul John Gascoigne

This is a tale that started in tears, carries on with tears, and barring a resumption of the age of miracles, will end in tears. Paul John Gascoigne’s tumultuous life has been tinged with unhappiness and misfortune since his humble beginnings in Newcastle when his demons first surfaced and football became his only refuge. His incredible skills would lift him to stardom, but he’ll be remembered as much for his outrageous antics as his astounding midfield play. (more…)

For The Love Of The Beautiful Game

by The Chairman

Henry - Fabregas

While watching the Barcelona – Arsenal game yesterday I realized how cruel love could be, even on a football pitch.  On one side you had Thierry Henry, a former Gunner, playing for Barcelona.  On the other side of the field you had Cesc Fabregas, a former Barcelona protégé, doing the same for Arsenal.  Both players ended their long-standing relationships with their favorite teams in order to advance their careers.  As can be expected, such difficult decisions often result in unintended consequences.  In their case, they were forced to play their old clubs.
