Show Your Support for Uncle Sam

If you are from the United States (or just fond of U.S. Soccer) and are a proponent of bringing the World Cup back to these shores, then make yourself useful by paying a visit to the World Cup Bid website at www.GOUSABID.com and signing the online petition to bring the World Cup to the good ole U.S. of A in 2018/2022.  U.S. Men’s National Team captain Carlos Bocanegra and U.S. Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati delivered the bid book to FIFA in Zurich last Friday are counting on you! No Go For North Korean Soccer Camp in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe continues to make headlines for all the wrong reasons.  In the latest act of ineptitude, the powers that be were planning on hosting the North Korean national football team prior to their participation in the 2010 World Cup.  Only problem is that the people of Zimbabwe haven’t forgiven the North Korea for their complicity in the brutal reign of Robert Mugabe.  Back in the mid 1980’s, the 5th Brigade, a group of soldiers loyal to Mugabe, killed tens of thousands and left approximately a million people homeless in the Gukuranhundi campaign.  It turns out that North Korean “special advisors” to Mugabe trained these troops.  (more…)

Old Firm Rivalry On Foreign Soil

In an effort to match or possibly top the outdoor NHL Winter Classic at Fenway Park earlier this year, the Fenway Sports Group is in talks to bring Boston sports fans one of the greatest rivalries in all of sports, Celtic v Rangers.  It is the equivalent to the Yankees v Red Sox, except 10 times more intense and steeped in religious and political history.  Should the good folks in Boston make this happen, it would be the first time the two clubs face each other outside of Scotland and it would be the most unfriendly ‘friendly’ ever played.  With all the pre and post-season soccer friendlies coming our way, this one should be worth the price of admission.

Football Versus the Volcano

Professional football teams across Europe have been grounded and forced to rely on alternate means of transportation due to the volcanic eruption in Iceland.  Barcelona has been forced to travel by bus (yes, bus) in order to make it in time to play the first leg of their tie with Inter Milan in the Champions League.  Lyon may be forced to do the same for their tie with Bayern Munich if conditions don’t improve soon.  I can only imagine what is going through the players’ minds.   (more…)

Barack Obama Breaches Years of Protocol to Watch Soccer Game

U.S. President Barack Obama breached years of protocol when he left the White House without the press corps charged with documenting his every move.  So what was so important that the President’s people failed to inform the press in time to follow him?  The leader of the free world left the White House to attend one of his daughter’s soccer games.  Surely the press will cut the Nation’s #1 soccer dad some slack. Baseball Tops Football in Global Review of Sports Salaries

According to the Annual Review of Global Sports Salaries 2010 by the Sporting Intelligence, the New York Yankees are the highest paid team in all of sport.  That’s surprising considering the global appeal of football around the globe.  Only four football teams (Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United) were included in the top 30, with the first three clubs cracking the top ten.   (more…)

MLS Asian Invasion

The Kansas City Wizards have signed Indian football star Sunil Chhetri to a four-year contract pending visa approval.  Sunil has twice been named Indian Player of the Year (2007 and 2009).  Easily one of India’s most recognizable football stars, Sunil was slated to join British side Queens Park Rangers (QPR) of the Coca Cola Championship last year, however he couldn’t complete the deal because of work permit issues.  Sunil will be the first Indian football star to play in MLS.  This is a big step forward in the growth of the league abroad, particularly in India, where there are potentially over a billion new viewers. A More Perfect American Union

I don’t know which was more anticlimactic, the Dems finally mustering the courage to pass healthcare legislation or the MLS Players Union and League reaching agreement and avoiding a strike. Both groups flirted with self-destruction, but elected to do the prudent thing and save their own bacon. Good move.  It is best to live to fight another day. (more…)

The Death of Goal-Line Technology

Not surprisingly, FIFA poured a healthy dose of irrationality on the debate concerning the use of goal-line technology. It is as if Sepp and his honchos are intent on leaving soccer in the Stone Age. How else can the garbage that spews forth from them about “universality” and not wanting to take one of the most important decisions away from the ref be taken seriously? Every other major sport has embraced technology when it comes to getting crucial decisions right. Why is it that soccer thinks it does not owe its fans this little bit of credibility? (more…)

Protest: Kim Jong-Il Style

In a strange case of life imitating art, or in this case football imitating politics, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea women’s football team pulled a move on the football pitch that only Kim Jong-Il would have been proud of. During an international friendly in Australia against the Matildas, the Australian women’s national team, the North Korean women walked off the pitch in protest over a controversial decision by the referee to award a penalty kick to their opponents. Television replays reportedly showed the call to be incorrect. In a display of defiance, the North Koreans were instructed by their coaching staff to walk. Can you believe that all this posturing was for a meaningless game? Nevertheless, after several minutes, sanity prevailed and play resumed.  Australia won 3-2. (more…)
