A bit of music for your listening pleasure. We frequently make the case for soft rock/yacht rock. Genres that are cool, sophisticated and wonderfully measured. In other words, genres that are awesome. In the spirit of awesome, there is no way I could keep Mr. B The Gentleman Rhymer to myself. The genre is Chap-Hop, which will soon be self-explanatory. It’s one of the greatest (more…)

No one can give an interview or connect with fans like Andrei Arshavin. Periodically, Arshavin plays Bill Simmons and reaches into his mailbag to see what his fans have to say. In the latest installment, the diminutive Russian (that’s apparently what every writer must call Arshavin) answers fan questions, and as usual, you’ll find some gems. Here are a few of my favorites. Your Saturday Beatdowns of Note: Blackpool severely beaten by Arsenal. Wigan bludgeoned by Chelsea. Toronto FC rolled by the New York Red Bulls. But as you digest these unfortunate beatdowns, please be weary of outlandish claims like: Theo Walcott has arrived. Cheslea are on course to score 8 billion goals.  The Red Bulls can win the World Cup. (more…)

William Gallas is a man out to break records. Today he shows up to his third London club for a medical. Joining Tottenham, his former employer’s cross-town rivals, will hardly stir up the same type of vitriol that arose from Sol Campbell’s move in the opposite direction. Arsenal fans won’t hate Gallas because he joined Spurs. (more…)

Sometimes news of failed transfers are just as interesting as successful ones. In MLS, we always hear names dropped about potential designated players (DP). Some of these names are verified by team owners. But what about the others? Don’t you ever wonder what types of players the league goes after? Geovanni just signed as a DP for the San Jose Earthquakes. (more…)

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) recently announced that Indian clubs will be allowed to register four foreign players for the season. The four can include three players from anywhere and a fourth that must be of Asian origin. Only three foreign players, however, will be allowed to be on the field at any given time. The AIFF’s foreign player rule, on the heels (more…)

It won’t happen, but it should. Diego Maradona has been rumored to take over at Aston Villa following the departure of Martin O’Neill. Seemingly, the idea is more Maradona’s than Villa’s, but I still would like to take the rumor seriously simply because it offers one of those once in a lifetime entertainment opportunities. No one questions Maradona’s coaching pedigree. (more…)

The U.S. men’s roster has been released for the friendly against Brazil on Tuesday, August 10 at the New Meadowlands Stadium in Dirty Jersey. Surprises? Well, not too surprising, but the most notable addition to the squad is one Jermaine Jones, a former German international who busts up midfields in the Bundesliga … when he’s not injured, of course. New Japanese Football Association president Junji Ogura is looking to usher in some changes in Japanese soccer. One of Ogura’s targets is to shift the J-League calendar from a spring-autumn season to an autumn-spring season to align with the European calendar. Ogura believes that this shift will ultimately lead to improved (more…)

Happy August, friends. Hopefully you’ve been enjoying the time away from European football and have taken some time to sink your teeth into MLS. With the recent designated player acquisitions across the league, there’s a buzz around MLS that’s been missing for some time. Fans of the game who have yet to convert to MLS are talking, and that can only be a good thing for the league. (more…)
