Daily Banter – 10.28.2009

In the first installment of Daily Banter … Real Madrid.

A 4-0 thrashing by Alcorón, a team in Spain’s Secunda División B.  With all the money that Real Madrid has spend this summer on the likes of Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Xabi Alonso, this result has to hurt.

Splurging on talent is common practice at Real Madrid.  Manchester City has joined the splurging party, and more teams in the near future are sure to contribute to this trend.  Given the astronomical spending sprees by these clubs, what is success?  Conversely, at what point are these projects be deemed failures?  It’s obviously too soon to deem either project a failure, but this result certainly raises questions at Real Madrid.

What do you think?

  1. Sir Mix-A-Lot says:

Real are rubbish. The Galacticos project didn’t work very well the first time around and it won’t work now. Good, consistent teams are built from the bottom up, not top down. Alcoron’s budget is 1/400th of Real’s. Money well spent by Real? I think not!

  2. RMP says:

    Utter humiliation.

Alvaro Arbeloa alone must cost more than Alcorcon; whoever they are. October 27th 2009 is going to be an annual holiday in their town…. TBH I don’t even think Alcocorn had Wikipedia page until this morning! Nice…

All the money in the world cannot equal sustained success without a proper structure they may have got away with it in the past but this Barcelona side are not going to ease off , madrid are going to have to really earn any league title over the next few seasons.

  3. Permy Johnson d/b/a DJ PJ says:

I hope that this trend fails. Mind you, if it works, it’s often a beautiful thing to watch. The first Galacticos on their day played some magnificent football and had beautiful hair (aside from Zidane). But, your right, Professor RMP, money without proper structure will equal failure more often than success. Look at Wall Street.

  4. RMP says:

Just like Wall Street Permy J! Such a shame to see the plan of buying their way to world domination is failing already. The only time I can remember them going for a bit of pragmatism to put foundations in place, the second coming of capello, they sacked him after winning La Liga because he didn’t do it prettily enough for them. Rank stupidity of the heighest order – and on that side of it, the fans have to take a massive share of the blame.

There is a new website commemorating the event with goals included.

Alcorcon’s budget is 1.3 million euros and their best player earns 45,000 euros per year.

  5. muraguri says:

It’s not even like they fielded a weak team. They had Raul, Benzema and co. out there and they were down 3-0 in the first half. Money doesn’t buy heart. This team after Dan Snyder’s heart.

  6. Mustafa says:

You certainly can’t expect to win when you have one of your best players talking like this.

QUOTE OF THE DAY (from the Fiver)

“I’ll be up front. During the season no one can point fingers because I am an exemplary sportsman, but vacations are there to enjoy and do what you want. This is my belief. And no, I do not have a girlfriend now. I have suffered like everyone who has loved. I am a sensitive person and I cry for love” – Cristiano Ronaldo

  7. RMP says:

Guti, Van der Vart, Ruud,a Madrid name team worth £125m, with 465 caps….Something someone just told me that, it would be perfectly legal for the Alcorcon team to refuse to play the 2nd leg, get hit with an automatic 3-0 loss and still go through to the next round. Hmmm

Another news which brought a smile to my face was the Geordies giving Chris Hughton the manager’s job on a FT basis. One of the nice guys in football. He deserves it.

  8. Mustafa says:

It is Spanish football so Real will probably pay Alcorcon off to go through. Of course the payment will be backed by the government.

Ashley is still in control of Newcastle and has no idea what he’s doing. He’s already put them in the Championship. If they get promoted, he’ll probably bring them right back down. That team needs to be sold to someone competent and fast before they go back up.

  9. Permy Johnson d/b/a DJ PJ says:

Let’s see if he can’t lead Newcastle back up so that Ashley can figure a way to take them back down.

I wonder who would win the competition to determine the Isaiah Thomas of football.

  10. Permy Johnson d/b/a DJ PJ says:

Speaking of big teams dropping, Milan give up two goals in injury time after being ahead 2-0 to Napoli.

  11. Sir Mix-A-Lot says:

Chris Hughton is a nice guy. For once Newcastle make a decision without first asking their fans for their opinion. Appointing Shearer was lunacy.

  12. RMP says:

Milan are struggling big time.Leonardo hasn’t made the ideal start to life on their bench. I hope they give him some more time on the job…

And agreed with the Shearer comment. No coaching experience and had they given a qualified person the job last year, they would have survived relagation.

Good result for the Gunners tonight…. i thought it was a great game and Liverpool played well…

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger: “The quality of the game was outstanding. Both teams played very well and there was very little between the two teams. I believe the experience of the two centre-backs was important in vital moments. The team played the way we want to play football: you could see the quality was there.”

  13. Sir Mix-A-Lot says:

Good game. League Cup matches are fun due to the free flowing football. Caught the 2nd half and I must say there wasn’t much in the way of defending either way. Question, why did Rafa play Yossi of the bench? Does he not realize how valuable this guy is, especially with Gerrard out? Odd.

  14. Permy Johnson d/b/a DJ PJ says:

Mix-A-Lot, Rafa needs to conserve his meager supply of talent. It was obvious that this was a game for the boys. Hard to question him given how he decided to approach the game — as an opportunity to rest players and give reserves a chance to shine — a la Arsene.
