Now that we’re getting close to finalizing the World Cup field, it’s time for some reflection on the process. It’s the age old question: Should the tournament encompass the best thirty-two teams in the world, or do qualifying regions make sense?
Recently, Australia defected from Oceania to Asia. Many have argued that the relative lack of strength in Oceania is problematic. As it stands, we’ve ended up with New Zealand facing Bahrain for a spot in the final thirty-two. If there are stronger teams in other regions, should there be a more robust way of determining who gets these final seeds?
What do you think?
