For sure MLS has done a lot to brand the game and instill it in people's minds that this game is here to stay. I think the people here in the US need to be reminded that soccer didnt just arrive with the MLS or with the Cosmos, it was here since the early 1900's, competing in the first WC and doing well at that.
I agree with the author that making MLS an urban and suburban thing is the key in spreading the good stuff about soccer. let's not forget that it's the poor schmoes that pay the money to go to NFL and MLB games, they're not all rich people. Jay Z is a good one to spread the good news to the urban community. I dont know why MLS hasnt used players like Kobe and K G to brand their image. Are they under som contract that they can't promote another sport? Getting those figures to support the beautiful game would go further than the Jay Z stamp.
Or rather combine the two to buy the new MLS franchise and see what it does for the urban people. Bringing players like Adebayor, Mikel or Essien would greatly improve the image of the game.

Paul -- I agree that it's time to start turning the corner. But I've got to admit that the league has made a ton of progress since the mid 90s.

For MLS, I can't say for the life of me what the brand is. Soccer, Football, Futbol?

MLB -- Follow it b/c it's the American pastime.
NLF -- Ditto.
MLS -- ???

It's a young league, but it's time to start turning the corner.
