On the Cutting Edge: Soccer Fans Don’t Need iPads – A Retrospective

by Clive Longbottom-Fellow, Esq.

iPad

Do you ever wonder how far we’ve actually come over the last four years?  How much more advanced are we now?  We decided to take a look back to the last World Cup to see which cool (or very uncool) gadgets were available to the soccer obsessed.  The one measure to keep in mind is that Apple just released the iPad, which will surely have some interesting World Cup-related applications.

Go Go Gadget Soccer Ball

Soccer Remote

In 2006, the English FA was ready to sell some product.  This official soccer ball, licensed through the FA, is a stitched ball (for the soccer snobs) that doubles as a universal remote that controls everything in the universe.  Or maybe just everything in your entertainment system.  Apparently the one thing it couldn’t control was Portugal.

Wow!  Free Updates!

Microsoft Soccer Scoreboard

The PC lovers must have lost their collective minds in 2006 when Microsoft (remember them?) released the Microsoft Soccer Scoreboard, a free Windows download providing soccer lovers with team updates … in real time.  I kid you not, in real time. Wow.

Rotary Phones, Wallpaper Included

T-Mobile Phone

Wallpaper, old phones, animations and slow video clips, oh my!  Like many of you, when I look back to what we used to do, sometimes I feel ashamed.  Except when I remember Eddie Murphy’s Party All the Time.  That song can strip anyone of shame.  Well, anyone except Eddie Murphy who doesn’t have the shame gene.  I mean have you seen his recent movies?  Um, me neither.  But I digress.

This phone makes me shudder.  Next time you run into your cool friend with the old soul who pretends to love old stuff and rants about how he/she hates technology, go find one of these things and recommend that they sell their iDevice.  You’ll find that loving old stuff is just a ploy to be more marketable in the friend/dating store.

Now that June 2010 is approaching, what devices have you come across that are going to change the soccer world?
