Your Saturday Beatdowns of Note: Blackpool severely beaten by Arsenal. Wigan bludgeoned by Chelsea. Toronto FC rolled by the New York Red Bulls. But as you digest these unfortunate beatdowns, please be weary of outlandish claims like: Theo Walcott has arrived. Cheslea are on course to score 8 billion goals.  The Red Bulls can win the World Cup. (more…)

William Gallas is a man out to break records. Today he shows up to his third London club for a medical. Joining Tottenham, his former employer’s cross-town rivals, will hardly stir up the same type of vitriol that arose from Sol Campbell’s move in the opposite direction. Arsenal fans won’t hate Gallas because he joined Spurs. (more…)

Cheaters never prosper. We love repeating these mantras that just aren’t true. Cheaters prosper all the time. Tomorrow, Arsenal get their Austrian pre-season underway when they take on SK Sturm Graz at UPC-Arena, the ground previously known as Arnold Schwarzenegger Stadium, a stadium formerly named after (more…)

Apparently Spain wants everything. The European Championship, the World Cup trophy, the Champions League, your soul, better food, the Basque Country, dreadlocks, to host the World Cup in 2018, Cesc Fabregas, and apparently any Arsenal player who seems remotely talented. Granted, Fabregas is already Spanish, but his contract is not. (more…)

Arsenal now has its very own Cristiano Ronaldo.  If you turn your head quickly enough, or happen to be on a high speed train flying by Marouane Chamakh, you would be forgiven for mistaking the new Arsenal man for Cristiano Ronaldo.  The Moroccan forward who has finally landed in North London on a free transfer from Bordeaux (more…)

Ah, post-season banter.  Love it.  In today’s Telegrapgh, Alan Smith has a great article about Cesc Fabregas’ impending move to Barcelona.  According to Smith, Cesc stopped by Arsenal’s training ground to pick up his boots.  While there, he popped in for a meeting with Arsene Wenger. Smith then suggests that it’s safe to assume that Wenger didn’t (more…)

Rewarding Dedication With A World Cup: Randomness, Awesomeness and Identity In Africa

by Miriti Murungi

IMG_8440

Rewarding love is a worthwhile endeavor.  A reward signifies acknowledgment that the recipient is seen and appreciated.  The South African World Cup is an exciting time for South Africans who have been loving soccer for decades.  But if you look closely at how Africa has reacted since 2004 when South Africa was awarded the World Cup, you will notice that much of Africa has been acting as if they are co-hosts, as if this is the first communally-hosted World Cup.  If this concept is difficult to grasp, just think of how excited Canadians would be if Mexico won the right to host the World Cup, or how excited the French would be at the prospect of an Italian World Cup, (more…)

“The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing world  he didn’t exist.”  Hmm.  Interesting.  Thanks, Keyser.  What about you, Arsene?  “Well the greatest trick I ever pulled was convincing the world that my team could be mentioned in the same breath as Barcelona.”  Very manipulative, Arsene.  Arsene Wenger is the Keyser Söze of football, and I mean that as a compliment.

Baseball Tops Football in Global Review of Sports Salaries

According to the Annual Review of Global Sports Salaries 2010 by the Sporting Intelligence, the New York Yankees are the highest paid team in all of sport.  That’s surprising considering the global appeal of football around the globe.  Only four football teams (Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United) were included in the top 30, with the first three clubs cracking the top ten.   (more…)

For The Love Of The Beautiful Game

by The Chairman

Henry - Fabregas

While watching the Barcelona – Arsenal game yesterday I realized how cruel love could be, even on a football pitch.  On one side you had Thierry Henry, a former Gunner, playing for Barcelona.  On the other side of the field you had Cesc Fabregas, a former Barcelona protégé, doing the same for Arsenal.  Both players ended their long-standing relationships with their favorite teams in order to advance their careers.  As can be expected, such difficult decisions often result in unintended consequences.  In their case, they were forced to play their old clubs.
