Blatter In! Corruption as Entertainment (Free Sepp)

by Miriti Murungi

Economist Cover

I really love corruption. There’s something about how it eliminates inefficiencies that makes me smile. There’s something about the smugness of those proficient in alleged corrupt practices that makes me want to watch Mr. Belvedere and drink tea out of fine china. And there’s something about real, brown envelopes filled with neat stacks of money that make me believe that Narnia might really exist and that I may have been going about trying to get things in the wrong way for way too long.

Corruption is just like a great movie. There’s plenty of action behind the scenes, it’s sophisticated, and it makes us continue dreaming and speculating. Really, what’s not to love, especially when you consider how many games of horrible football you’re willing to suffer through? Corruption has so much to offer. (more…)

Daily Banter – 3.11.2011

by Clive Longbottom-Fellow, Esq.

“FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against six match officials in relation to the international A friendly matches Bolivia-Latvia and Estonia-Bulgaria played in Antalya (Turkey) on February 9 2011.” That’s always good news. Seven goals, two games, all penalties. Something doesn’t smell right, and if there’s any entity capable of recognizing the smell of stench, it’s FIFA. Hi-five, FIFA!

Sepp Blatter hates your football. FIFA’s champion recently called for a reduction in the size of domestic football to raise the standard of international football. You know, the international football that’s on every weekend. Sepp Blatter wants to sacrifice that which we regularly watch for games that happen once every time a moon orbits around Jupiter. He thinks that the standard of international (more…)

FIFA 2018 & 2022 World Cup Bids: The Transparency Vacuum

by Miriti Murungi

transparency

The announcement is in. The 2018 and 2022 World Cups will be held in Russia and Qatar, respectively. The response in England and the United States has been heated, with most of the heat rightly focusing on FIFA and FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

Some of the concerns about the results are legitimate, others less so and misdirected. There’s talk of freedom of press issues, human rights, and democracy, although few of these concerns have been put into context yet.

One of the big stories leading up to yesterday’s announcement surrounded the Panorama expose targeting corruption in FIFA. Blatter reportedly reminded Executive Committee (exco) members before they voted on who will win the right to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups of the “evils of media,” clearly a disparaging reference to the English media having the audacity to suggest that FIFA is a corrupt organization.

The thought of FIFA penalizing a bid for the actions of a free press is troubling to say the least.  It suggests what most people should already know (more…)

The China 2026 World Cup and Fun with FIFA’s Bidding Timeline

by Miriti Murungi

Chinese Football

Wei Di, head of the Chinese Football Association, has spoken. China wants the 2026 World Cup. Given China’s explosion over the past decade, it might be hard to say no to the world’s most populous nation, even with the recent corruption scandals in Chinese soccer.

According to Wei, “It really moved us to see all the social benefits South Africa got from hosting the World Cup.”

And by social benefits, we should probably assume that he also means financial and publicity benefits.

Wei continued, “Everyone has been debating whether China should bid for the World Cup or when to bid, but seeing how successfully South Africa hosted it, I have to say that China has no reason not to bid and now is the best time.”

And there you go.

So prepare yourself for forty-nine year old Shakira with an umbrella under the hot Beijing sun singing an English version of some Chinese song over and over again in the summer of 2026 if the Chinese bid is successful. But first, there is a bid process to navigate. (more…)

FIFA Plays Hard to Get with Technology

by The Chairman

Soccer and Technology

The World Cup thus far has been less about the Beautiful Game on the field and more about the inexplicable refusal of Sepp Blatter and his clan to uphold FIFA’s own Fair Play Code of Conduct.  In the wake of recent controversial decisions (or indecision –  you make the call), the pressure is mounting on FIFA to stop making nonsensical excuses and step into the 21st Century and embrace the use of technology by game officials. Daily Banter – 6.29.2010

Hand balls missed. Goals incorrectly disallowed. Repeatedly ignoring obvious solutions. If FIFA was a political party, they would be voted out of office in the midterm election over and over again. Thankfully for FIFA administrators, democratic notions do not factor into the machine’s collective decision making process. FIFA doesn’t fear the people, the pundits, or anyone else with an opinion. FIFA Ban On Headscarves Not Up To Snuff

by The Chairman

fifa_logo.jpg

FIFA has banned the Iranian Women’s Football Team from competing in the Youth Olympics Games due to be held in August in Singapore for wearing headscarves.  According to the laws of the game, players are not permitted to wear anything other than basic compulsory equipment: a jersey or shirt with sleeves, shorts, stockings, shin guards and footwear. In response, Iran’s National Olympic Committee Secretary General Bahram Afsharzadeh sent a letter appealing the decision to various governing bodies, including FIFA and the IOC. (more…)

“Rocket Man” Elton John Supports Grassroot Soccer Initiative

by The Chairman

Rocket Man & GRS

Last week , Elton John spent  his 63rd birthday in South Africa endorsing an HIV initiative supported by one of our favorite non-profit organizations, Grassroot Soccer (GRS).  The initiative, Football for Hope, is a movement created by FIFA and StreetFootballWorld, a football development network.  The goal (no pun intended, well maybe a little) is to open 20 centers across the continent that would use football as a platform to educate African youth about important social issues, such as HIV prevention, children’s rights and the environment.
