The Evra vs. Suarez Racism Extravaganza: When Clubs React and Shouldn’t

by Miriti Murungi

Dial It Back

The Guardian’s Marina Hyde wrote an incisive article framing the slightly absurd aftermath of the Patrice Evra-Luis Suarez incident. If you happened to miss the storm, Evra accused Suarez of racially abusing him at least ten times during last weekend’s Liverpool-Manchester United match. Hyde’s basic point was a simple one: when it comes to the he said-she said, don’t jump to conclusions. But there is one conclusion that is safe to draw from this saga: when two people take diametrically opposing views on whether an incident of this nature happened, not once, but ten times, someone is engaging in high-level, pre-meditated fabrication.

Now, no question, Evra’s allegation is a serious one, but it isn’t the only serious issue raised by the incident. The reaction by the players’ respective clubs should at least raise an eyebrow, if not both. (more…)

Oh Steven Gerrard.  Oh captain, my captain.  What a game he had this weekend.  Incisive passing, vision, he had it all.  In one move, he sealed the fate of United and Benitez.  Brilliant back pass.   Best ever maybe.  He’s had a quiet season by his standards, and that sublime backpass just might end up being one of his most significant contributions. Funny old game, football.

Football Managers And Their Mind Games

Mind Games

The Classless One

Following Inter Milan’s 3-2 aggregate win over Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final at Camp Nou, Jose Mourinho said the following:

“This is the best loss of my life. It is a shame I couldn’t play: I would have been awful on the pitch but I would have shed blood as my players did”.

Judging by his classless romp around the football pitch, it is increasingly evident that Jose Mourinho suffers from an inferiority complex.  I fully understand that the Special One’s teams thrive off of an ‘Us against the World’ mentality, however after the battle has been waged and won, it is imperative that the victors not needlessly shame the losers.   (more…)

So the cat is finally out of the bag; Liverpool Football Club is up for sale.  Not that we didn’t see this coming, but could the timing of an official announcement have been any worse?  The team still has a slim chance of finishing in the top four and it will take some time to find a new owner.  So, why the sudden need to make an announcement?   (more…)

Rafa May Soon Walk Alone

by The Chairman

Kool Aid Man Spill

Liverpool coach Rafa Benitez is either insane or trying really hard to get fired.  After masterminding one of the worst collapses in form in recent memory, the Spaniard is requesting £60 million in additional funds for player acquisitions.  Under normal circumstances, his assessment of the team’s needs would be warranted. However, there is nothing normal about Liverpool’s play this season.  With every passing day, it seems that Rafa is looking to deflect blame for the team’s dismal performance.  While there is plenty of blame to go around, much of the blame belongs to Rafa. Oh Champions League, how you entertain me.  Alas, there are no more English teams in Europe, well except for Fulham and Liverpool.  The horror.  But really, Fulham and Liverpool aren’t really in Europe anyway.  They’re just in Europe’s basement, which is great and all because you’re still in Europe’s house, but you’re still not in the nice part of the house. A Sustainable Way Forward

by The Chairman

Arsenal Manager, Arsene Wenger

It is no secret that Arsenal Football Club (AFC) is run under a self-sustainable business model.  The club takes great pride in touting this fact, sometimes to the detriment of some of its own fans who want greater on field success in the form of silverware (AFC has gone five long, arduous years without a major trophy – cue the violin).  According to Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, it is imperative that football teams live within their means, by which he means that clubs should only spend what they make.  That is why a few years ago, after the club decided to build Emirates Stadium, Arsene embarked on an odyssey of sorts  to revolutionize how the squad was constructed. Ah, the irony.  The man who was one half of the couple primed to replace David and Victoria Beckham as the poster couple of football is back.  Harry Kewell, now plying his trade at Galatasaray in Turkey, is healthy.  Well he was.  He’s actually injured now.  Anyway, after being written off at Liverpool as injury prone, (more…)

Kool Aid Man Spill

There needs to be a 24/7 Rafa Benitez channel.  All Rafa, all the time.

The minute Torres gets substituted, we look at each other and say, if (or rather when) Lyon equalize, they’re going after Rafa’s head because of this substitution.  Forget that it may have had nothing to do with the equalizer, but that’ll be a talking point.

Lisandro Lopez

This man could very well cause a world of problems for Liverpool this week.  Last time these two teams met, Lyon came from behind to win at Anfield.  This is not going to be an easy journey to the mainland by any stretch of the imagination.  What’s it going to take, Rafa?
