Daily Banter – 4.9.2010

by Clive Longbottom-Fellow, Esq.

By now we’ve all heard that Manchester United has signed Chivas de Guadalajara forward Javier “Chicharito” Hernández.  As part of the deal, Manchester United will be playing Chivas on July 31, 2010 in the new Estadio Chivas (which will be quite stunning based on the plans).  So far, so good.  (more…)

Baseball Tops Football in Global Review of Sports Salaries

According to the Annual Review of Global Sports Salaries 2010 by the Sporting Intelligence, the New York Yankees are the highest paid team in all of sport.  That’s surprising considering the global appeal of football around the globe.  Only four football teams (Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United) were included in the top 30, with the first three clubs cracking the top ten.   (more…)

Daily Banter – 3.30.2010

Outside of France, the big match today is Manchester United vs. Bayern Munich.  In 1999, the Champions League final was played between these two European powers in Barcelona.  I recall flying into Barcelona the morning after the final.  I met up with two friends at the airport who had tickets to the final. One friend went, the other friend informed me (more…)

Italy’s Premier Should Stop Meddling with Milan

by The Chairman

Silvio Berlusconi

Conflicts of interest and abuses of power are well-documented hallmarks of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s reign.  Berlusconi has a stranglehold on Italian media outlets (many of which, he owns) and isn’t shy about manipulating legislation to avoid being tried in court.  One has to wonder what role his magical touch has played in the current state of affairs at his club, AC Milan.  The Rossoneri, once feared as arguably the best football side in the world, are nothing more than a shadow of their former selves. A Sustainable Way Forward

by The Chairman

Arsenal Manager, Arsene Wenger

It is no secret that Arsenal Football Club (AFC) is run under a self-sustainable business model.  The club takes great pride in touting this fact, sometimes to the detriment of some of its own fans who want greater on field success in the form of silverware (AFC has gone five long, arduous years without a major trophy – cue the violin).  According to Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, it is imperative that football teams live within their means, by which he means that clubs should only spend what they make.  That is why a few years ago, after the club decided to build Emirates Stadium, Arsene embarked on an odyssey of sorts  to revolutionize how the squad was constructed. The English Are Coming! The English Are Coming!!!

by The Chairman

To be the best, you have to play with the best.

No they’re not coming with tricks up their sleeves like last time.  This time they come bearing gifts and it comes in the form of a football camp with none other than Manchester United great, Paul Aaron Scholes.  Scholesey  has teamed up with Midwest Soccer Academy (MSA) to bring the youth of America the “Paul Scholes Soccer Academy,” a two-week day camp for 5th through 12th graders.  For a nominal fee of $449 per week, aspiring U.S. Nationals can learn from one of the best players England has produced.  Let’s hope Scholesey skips the lesson on tackling.  The national team already has a hard enough time fielding a full squad during major tournaments.

Pregame — No Stevie G.  Rooney healthy.  Just refresh you page every now and again to keep up with the match commentary.

Balls on the field.  We knew that one was coming. Poor Pepe.

And we’ve kicked off. United moving right to left, which obviously leaves Liverpool moving in the other direction.

3 min -  Rooney scores.  But the flag is up.
