Daily Banter – 3.11.2010

by Clive Longbottom-Fellow, Esq.

So what’s the lesson boys and girls?  That’s right, you can’t buy success.  Although money certainly helps, it doesn’t help to have crazy people running your club.  There’s something heartwarming about Real Madrid, a team that went out and bought the two best players in world, losing to a Lyon side who sold Madrid their best player as well.  That’s the football gods for you.

Daily Banter – 2.20.2010

by Clive Longbottom-Fellow, Esq.

Title race in the EPL is on.  Everton beat Manchester United 3-1 this morning with a pair of late goals.  Everton is on fine form as of late.   Since the arrival of U.S. international Landon Donovan, Everton is 5-1-1.  I’m not saying that there’s a correlation, I’m just saying.  It will be interesting to see if Donovan finds a way to extend his loan until the end of the season.  Do you think he should stay?

Chelsea Free to Spend More Money!

Ashley Cole Note

On February 4, 2010, Chelsea Football Club entered into a “confidential” Settlement Agreement with RC Lens that lifted the ban imposed on Chelsea by FIFA of registering any new players for two successive transfer periods.  Considering the amount of personnel turnover at the top clubs these days, such a ban could potentially cripple a club’s success.  FIFA initially imposed the ban on Chelsea until the January 2011 transfer window as a disciplinary sanction for improperly inducing former RC Lens player Gael Kukuta to breach his contract and transfer to Chelsea.  In November 2009, Chelsea appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (”CAS”) and the CAS Panel stayed the ban pending the outcome of Chelsea’s appeal.  (more…)

Kenyan Prime Minister’s Action on Football Matters Raises Questions About Focus on Social Challenges

by Clive Longbottom-Fellow, Esq.

McDonald Mariga

Kenyan international McDonald Mariga has secured a switch from Parma to Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan side.  Not surprisingly, Kenyans have been paying attention given that this is highest profile transfer for a Kenyan footballer in the modern era.

Hours before the close of the transfer window, Mariga was seemingly on his way to Manchester City.  Kenya was excited, even though for most Kenyans he was going to the wrong team in Manchester.  As in most African nations, the English Premier League is the big draw in Kenya, dwarfing the once storied Kenyan Premier League.  The move not only resonated with average Kenyans, but it apparently also resonated at the highest levels of government.  In order to engineer Mariga’s move to the Premier League, Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga put on his cape and hit the phones.  Raila became an all-action player — the type of player Arsenal desperately needs.

But it makes you wonder … is Raila inspired to move this quickly and aggressively on non-football related matters? (more…)
