When Reggaeton and Football Collide

by Clive Longbottom-Fellow, Esq.

Daddy Yankee Mundial

A few days ago we gave you a post on football-inspired music, paying tribute to the golden voice of Diego Maradona, Manu Chao, and Jorge Ben.  Now we’ve got some more for you.  Who’s fatherly, was previously named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people, has two thumbs, and just released a football song?  Wrong.  It’s Daddy Yankee.  If you looked at the picture before answering the question, you cheated.  No reggaeton for you.  (Video after the break)

This summer Daddy Yankee will be releasing his latest album, Mundial, which includes Grito Mundial, a football-inspired anthem that will hopefully completely erase Ricky Martin’s “Here we go! Ale, Ale, Ale” from my memory.  Grito Mundial is not an official World Cup song even though it looks and sounds like one.   Mr. Yankee might say that he didn’t write this song with the World Cup in mind, but he did.  That’s just my professional opinion.  He wants you to bump this straight through the summer.

The video for Grito Mundial gets two thumbs up.  It takes you from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro to Buenos Aires, where Mr. Yankee shot several scenes with the infamous La 12, the storied Barra Brava of Boca Juniors.

The song?  Depends on your musical taste.  But we could be in store for the 2010 version of Gasolina.  If you are one of the many who don’t know anything about reggaeton, none of this will mean anything to you, but you’ll still enjoy the shots in the video.  Check out Mr. Yankee’s video below.  Enjoy …

How dare you take a shot at La Copa De La Vida? The Rickster can sleep easy, since this song has nothing on his, however the video is S-W-E-E-T.

That Ricky Martin song made my ears bleed. Not hating on Ricky, just the song. If comparing the videos, there’s no comparison. Daddy Yankee hands down.

good video not a fan of the song. To tie this in with your piece on Jay-Z, he should be the one writing a song about the WC, now that would be something. A colaboration of JayZ, Many Chao, and since coaching isnt a top priority for Maradona, have him do a chameo as well.

  4. vivabolivar says:

Excuse me, I meant Manu Chau

  5. Clive Longbottom-Fellow, Esq. says:

Yeah. Imagine a collaboration from these guys, an african artist, an asian artist, a European artist … A global collaboration.

    I’d buy it immediately.

As long as it’s not a We Are the World IV.
